Ready to Grow as a School Leader? The CAIS Leadership Institute Is Open to You

Leadership does not begin when you receive a new title. It begins when you become curious about how a school works, look beyond your own area of responsibility and start building the skills to help others succeed.

The CAIS Independent School Leadership Diploma Program is designed for educators and school professionals who are ready to take that next step. You might be preparing for your first formal leadership role, growing into a position you recently accepted or looking to better understand the many moving parts of an independent school.

And you do not need to work at a CAIS school to participate.

Leadership Institute modules are open to faculty and staff from CAIS and non-CAIS schools. This makes the program a valuable option for professionals who are considering a career in Canadian independent education, as well as those who are already working in the sector and want to broaden their experience.

Learn Beyond Your Current Role

Leading in a school requires more than expertise in one area. Effective leaders understand how education programs, people, operations, governance and strategy connect.

Leadership Institute modules give participants the opportunity to explore topics such as:

  • Education programs
  • Finance
  • Human resources
  • Advancement
  • Governance
  • Communications
  • Enrolment management
  • Risk management
  • Technology leadership
  • Neurodiversity
  • Pluralism
  • Faculty and staff culture
  • School transformation and accreditation

Each module brings together professionals with different roles, experiences and perspectives. Along with practical learning, participants have the opportunity to build relationships with colleagues from across the independent school community.

That network can be just as valuable as the course content. It gives participants people to learn from, exchange ideas with and turn to as their careers develop.

Choose the Path That Works for You

You do not need to commit to the full Diploma to take part.

Faculty and staff may register for individual Leadership Institute modules that align with their interests, responsibilities or professional goals. A communications professional might explore crisis communications. A teacher considering administration might begin with education program foundations or faculty and staff culture. An aspiring operational leader might choose finance, human resources or risk management.

Participants who choose to pursue the CAIS Diploma in Independent School Leadership complete 10 modules, including five required modules and five electives.

A Note About Foundations

The Foundations for School Leadership Program is the starting point for new participants who intend to complete the full CAIS Diploma.

Foundations helps participants develop their own leadership practice while building a shared understanding of independent school leadership. It is a required prerequisite for the Diploma, but it is not necessary for professionals who simply want to take individual Diploma modules as stand-alone professional learning.

In other words, you can begin exploring Leadership Institute modules without committing to the full program. Should you later decide to pursue the Diploma, Foundations will become an important part of that journey.

Your Next Career Step May Begin Here

You do not need to wait until you feel completely ready for leadership. Professional growth often begins by exploring a new area, meeting people outside your usual circle and developing a broader understanding of the work.

The CAIS Leadership Institute offers a place to do exactly that.

Upcoming virtual Leadership Institute sessions are scheduled for November 2026, February 2027 and May 2027. Module details and registration information will be added as they become available.
